Expats in Uganda

Your Practical Guide to settling and living in Uganda

About Competitions

Uganda is what postcards are made of. It is that time of the year again, when you celebrate your lens and share the revelry with us! After its roaring success last year, Expats in Uganda (a product of Lynx Media Ltd) is hosting the third edition of its Amateur Photography Competition (APC) from October 1 to November 15, 2016. And we are nothing, if not about the ‘extra’ for our dear readers. So this year, we have introduced two new award categories! In addition to last year’s three submission categories— Wildlife/ Nature, Landscape/ Scenery and Urban/Cultural, we also have the Viewers’ Choice and Children’s entries this year. Refer to our guidelines for more information. Times ticking, start clicking!

Mark Dudley

I enjoyed photography since 2005, but I didn’t take it seriously until 2010, when I read an article about macro photography by judge Sherry McKelvie. Whilst my initial interest was in macro/micro photography, I have also meandered into Avian photography. I have written several articles and run a successful Facebook page. I love that photography gets me out into the wild and I am never more content than when observing nature, camera in hand.

Peter Hogel

I have lived in East Africa for the past five years, guiding and doing wildlife photography in Tanzania and Uganda. I have had a lifelong interest in nature and wildlife, insects being my speciality, combined with macro photography. Being in nature, studying, observing and enjoying has grown a profound love to wildlife photography and into guiding. I’ve been a professional photographer for 30 years, based in Sweden. I have travelled the world, but settled in Uganda.

Judd Irish Bradley

New Mexico photographer Judd Irish Bradley feels most at home behind the lens of a camera. His passion lies with his love of fast music, quirky angles, and beautiful landscapes, all of which are evident in his traditional and digital fine art photographs. Although a professional photographer since 1993, Judd has been working in his photography studio in the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico since 2000. He close the storefront in 2014 to explore new opportunities overseas. Judd always has a camera by his side and loves incorporating his love of music and travel by working with touring bands and exploring whichever country he is currently residing in.

Sherry McKelvie

Sherry is an entrepreneur running her own construction and generator business in Kampala, where she has been living for 24 years. Married, with two sons and four grandchildren, she loves to photograph birds and other wildlife in her spare time. Her garden, on the edge of a papyrus swamp, is constantly twittering with birds, as is their family cottage on Bulago Island in Lake Victoria. She is a member of the Uganda Safari Guides Association and the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre. She is also the author of the ‘Birds in Uganda’ guide.

Usha Harish

Usha Harish is a passionate photographer, avid traveller, nature lover, chartered accountant, and a mom. She loves wildlife and nature, likes to capture the emotions of people and animals alike in their natural habitat. Beautiful colours, animal patterns and animal behavior intrigue her as much as the act of translating those into images using the camera. She is based out of East Africa for the past 8 years currently in Kampala. She was awarded the East African Wildlife Photographer of 2016; by East African Wild Life Society eawildlife.org. Her work can be seen on www.ushaharish.com
